Library Construction Update

FLEMINGTON LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

The Flemington Free Public Library was generously bequeathed funds which are being used to address issues in the library basement so that it can be used for storage.

The basement had asbestos around the pipes and was too damp to store anything properly.

In the course of the current remediation project, an oil tank was discovered that was not decommissioned in the late 1960s when the building’s heating system was converted to natural gas. This presented additional challenges, and has extended the remediation timeline.

The FFPL basement remediation has included asbestos removal, the addition of new French drains around the perimeter of the basement to improve drainage, and now, with the discovery of the oil tank, the removal of fuel remaining in that long-forgotten tank as well as fuel remaining in the pipes that supplied the legacy heating system. Ultimately, it will include removal of the oil tank as well.

Unfortunately, the project has also generated more dust, noise and odors than planning had anticipated.

The Library Board is working to get the library re-opened to the public while allowing the basement project to continue.  Updates will be provided as they are available.
